Kansas Career Pipeline
Career Pipeline helps students choose a career path and connect with employers.
A new Web-based service promises to help Wichita area employers by smoothing the often rocky connection between students, high school, colleges and employers.
The nonprofit company, Career Pipeline, is the brainchild of former contractor and youth program director Andy Solter. His small operation is based at the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas at 150 N Main in Wichita.
He is rolling out a two-part system that enables students to figure out what careers are best for them, guides them to the appropriate education, and then connects them with employers searching for their talents.
The first piece of the system is an online skills and interest assessment for students as young as fifth grade. Students can learn what they like to do and how that matches up with hundreds of careers. It then lays out the education needed to reach that career.
How will students in the Circle District utilitze this information?
The Kansas Career Pipeline site offers three well-researched inventories to our district students. KCP offers very extensive information about almost 1,000 career specialties and programs of study at various educational levels. These are divided into five levels of education:
- High school completion
- Some training after high school (on-the-job training, apprenticeship)
- Completion of associate degree and/or certificate
- Completion of bachelor’s degree
- Advanced degree
Students can see lists of occupations (career specialties) for any cluster at any of these educational levels. They can also see the titles of postsecondary majors (instructional programs) that they would pursue related to specific occupations or clusters and find schools in the state or nationwide that offer those majors. They also can see a very complete description of any of the approximately 1,000 occupations (career specialties), including a video that shows work tasks.
